The thought of starting a new habit can always feel like it's soo much. Thoughts like oh its too much work or I can't do that, or what?! I have to do that.. there comes a lot or a little resistance, and a lot of chatter in your mind and this goes for any new habit you're trying to develop. And as humans we have such a talent for over complicating even the most simple things.

Today we're going into the habit of being grateful. Here we go let's talk about how to add more gratitude into your daily life. How can we make it in to a habit that I can keep and commit too. Habits aren't just for a one time deal - its for life. The quality of your habits, creates the quality of your life. And we're so powerful that we can really develop any habit we want if we want to bad enough.

First up, Why should we add more gratitude in our lives?!? The Benefits:

  • Being more optimistic and happy.
  • More likely to take care of your health: eating right, exercising and checking up with doctors regularly.
  • You may feel less aches and pains and even feel healthier. (According to a study in 2012 published in the Personality and Individual Differences.)
  • It can improve your relationships and create more empathy for others.
  • Multiple studies show that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression.
  • You can sleep better.
  • Improves self-esteem.
  • Increases mental strength.
  • Makes us more giving.
  • Help us find more meaning in our lives.
  • Less focused on the materialistic.
  • Reduce your blood pressure.
It's no wonder there are so many benefits to being grateful. It makes you realize and focus on the things that we have in our lives that are going well. It shifts our focus from whats wrong to whats going right.

Before you get started:

You gotta want a change. Maybe you feel unsatisfied or unfulfilled with where you're at. Or you just wanna feel better and happier. Just because you start a gratitude practice doesn't mean bad things won't happen, or that you'll magically feel grateful everyday all day. It's not really how it works - its definitely not a quick fix, although the benefits can sometimes be felt immediately depending on how open you are to it. So, be honest with yourself: Why do you want to add more gratitude in your life? How can you benefit from a daily practice? What can you gain? Once you figure this out it's easier to stick to the goal. I'm not trying to just teach you how to do it for a few weeks or months, I'm talking a life long habit that will enhance your overall well being - mind, body and spirit. It took me being inconsistent for many years until I realized how valuable and beneficial and important it was to me, to how i felt and how i was able to live well. Just start it, imperfectly, and even with skepticism. Understanding your reason for starting a gratitude practice can keep ya on track.

Keep it Simple:

The best time to do this practice is in the morning. Although I believe it's useful to find a time that you know you can do it. Having a power morning routine can be a life game changer including your daily gratitude. It's a peaceful way to start the day and set your intentions for the day. And I'll make suggestions later on, on different ways to implement gratitude depending on what works for you. It can only take a few minutes out of your day.

Put the distractions away:

Our soul needs quiet time. like seriously when was the last time you had that? Sometimes this means waking up 15 minutes earlier before the kids, before the craziness. So set your phone aside, grab a cup of tea and your journal. Sit in a comfy place that doesn't have distractions. Yes put your phone somewhere else. Trust me you don't want to ruin your morning by checking into the demands of the world. This habit actually tends to make us more distracted and unable to prioritize what is important.

Take a deep breathe and dive in:

Sit up straight, either in your chair, or crossed legs, and take 3 deep breathes inhaling through your belly, chest and to the top of your head, hold for a few seconds and let out a big exhale from the top of your head, down to your chest and belly. Inhale and Exhale. If you have more time you can do more than 3 breathes. You can feel your body. relax and it allows you to get present in your body and the moment. So often we try to multi-task, which just causes more stress, takes up more of our time, and is overall less satisfying. Or we just rush from thing to thing. Just take it easy you deserve an extra 10 minutes.

Get a fresh new journal:

Ugh I love the feeling of a smooth pen on paper. It just feels so good. lol! I've been journalling for most of my life since I was 9. lol, although my journals weren't as insightful as they are now, its great to see the evolution. Here's how I write my gratitudes: Pick 3-10 things you're grateful for in the present term. Write them down starting with " I am so happy and grateful for.." Added bonus if you can really feel the feelings of happiness and gratitude as you write and reread them. The practice itself is helpful but the feelings are much more powerful along with your written words.

I highly recommend writing your gratitudes and even your goals daily on pen to paper. It really makes a huge difference. If you're just starting out and you're like I'm not a pen and paper kind of person, no problem, write it out on your notes app or speak out and think the things you're grateful for in the same format above, and you can do it on your way to work, or while you're brushing your teeth if you're short on time. My recommendation is to do anything within the time frame you can manage. It's easy to give your self excuses why you don't want to...  yet its so simple when you just do it. It doesn't take much time or effort.

For beginners, I also love to use "The Super Secret" App - this isn't a sponsored post - but I really love this app. Especially on days when I feel less motivated. It has daily inspiration, affirmations as well as a place to write your daily gratitude. This is an easy way to store it on your phone and can reflect back on it over time. Check out the app its free and it makes starting this process wayyy easy!!

Don't overthink it.

The brilliance of the human mind is that we're so good at overthinking and talking ourselves out of doing the things that are good for us. As if postponing, good habits will somehow make us feel better in the long run, it doesn't. Gratitude is one of those things that we easily can brush aside because it can feel silly, or you feel like you don't have anything to be grateful for. There is no perfect or right way to start a gratitude journal, just start!

You might fall off track.

It's normal to fall off track of any new habits.. trust me, I've fallen on and off the gratitude journalling many times. Its taken me years to finally get into the groove and find what works for me. And you know what sometimes you just won't get it done. Do what you can do and stop being so hard on yourself. This is supposed to be fun, just let go!! And if you do fall off, just pick up back up as soon as possible. Falling is sometimes inevitable but staying down is a choice.

To put it simply, it takes 3 simple steps:

1. Do your practice in the morning. Put your phone away, and turn off the tv.

2. Take 3 deep breathes. Get present to the now.

3. Write down 3-10 things you're grateful for now in present tense form: "I am so happy and grateful for...". Really feel the feelings of gratitude.

More Ideas to Cultivate Daily Gratitude:

  • Write a Thank-you Note
  • Thank someone Mentally
  • Write in your gratitude journal
  • Pray
  • Meditate and Be Mindful
  • Play the Grateful Game - Find everything around you that you're grateful for now.
  • Start a conversation: What are you grateful for today? with your partner, kids, friends, family.
  • End your day listing 3-10 things you're grateful from the day.
In order to change your life you must change the daily habits that you engage in. It is the daily actions, that lead to creating your life. Gratitude is like a muscle, the more you focus on it the easier it becomes to find things that make you grateful. What you focus on can expand and grow either positively. or negatively, we get to choose. Sending you so much love as you begin this journey of gratitude and feeling more joyful in our daily hectic lives.

Cultivating gratitude is an essential part of creating joy and happiness in your life.

There are so many valuable health benefits of practicing daily gratitude. Those including reducing inflammation, improving immunity, lowering high blood pressure, increase good cholesterol, improving sleep quality and boosting the "feel good" hormone serotonin.

It allows us to be more present and to be able to start focusing more of the good that we already have. Not only to just attract more of what we want. It's important to cultivate a habit of gratitude. It has helped pull me out of the darkest times by focusing on the good versus the things we cannot control. It makes life more meaningful. Here are 12 of my favorite quotes about gratitude. I hope that it can inspire you to develop and cultivate a habit and heart for gratitude.

  1. Learn to be thankful for what you already have while you pursue all that you want. – Jim Rohn

  2. It is not joy that makes us grateful, it is gratitude that makes us joyful. - Unknown

  3. God gave you a gift of 84,600 seconds today. Have you used one of them to say thank you? - William Arthur Ward
  4. We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives. – John F. Kennedy

  5. When gratitude becomes an essential foundation in our lives, miracles start appearing everywhere – Emmanuel Dalgher
  6. Be grateful for what you have and stop complaining — it bores everybody else, does you no good, and doesn’t solve any problems. - Zig Ziglar

  7. Gratitude is the antidote to fear and thankfulness is a cure for worry. On this day, rise to grateful and thankful. – Robin Sharma

  8. Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. – William Arthur Ward

  9. The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now – Oprah Winfrey
  10. Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns problem into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and create a vision for tomorrow. – Melodie Beattie
  11. If you want to find happiness, find gratitude - Steve Marboli
  12. The best way to show my gratitude is to accept everything, even my problems, with joy. - Mother Teresa

To show up in practicing gratitude can be tough. That's why it's a practice - it's something that takes time to get good at. It can be difficult to cultivate gratitude during difficult times. It's natural to be negative and takes more effort to be positive. However, lack of gratitude can lead to losing our purpose and even losing sight of how blessed we really are in the scope of things.

On the days when I don't practice gratitude, it happens to all of us, I can feel a huge difference in energy.  Gratitude is a game changer for your life, happiness, and overall well-being. Studies time and time again support the notion that grateful people are just happier. They tend to also exercise more and get sick less. Not sure where or how to start a daily gratitude practice? Check out how to start and continue a daily gratitude ritual.

Thank you for reading!! Feel free to share or pass it along!
